An accessibility audit checks a page against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) to find barriers for people with disabilities — things like images without alt text, form fields without labels, buttons a screen reader can't name, and low-contrast text. This tool runs an automated audit against WCAG 2.0, 2.1, and 2.2 (levels A and AA) plus Section 508, and reports what it finds by severity.

It tests against WCAG 2.1/2.2 AA, which is the standard U.S. courts and the DOJ point to for ADA web compliance, so it's the right starting point for an ADA compliance audit. Be honest with yourself, though: no automated tool can certify full ADA compliance. Automated testing reliably catches the machine-detectable issues (a large share of the total); a complete audit also needs manual testing with a keyboard and a screen reader. Use this to find and fix the bulk of issues fast, then layer manual testing on top.

Automated testing is excellent at catching clear-cut, rule-based failures — missing alt text, missing labels, invalid ARIA, contrast below the WCAG threshold — with essentially no false positives, because axe-core is deliberately conservative. What it can't judge is context: whether alt text is meaningful, whether the reading order makes sense, whether a custom widget is actually operable. So a clean automated result is necessary but not sufficient — it means the mechanical issues are gone, not that the page is perfect.

The audit runs the WCAG 2.0, 2.1, and 2.2 rule sets at levels A and AA, plus best-practice and Section 508 rules, using axe-core. AA is the level almost every legal and procurement requirement targets, so that's what we check against. Each issue is labelled with its impact — critical, serious, moderate, or minor — so you can prioritise.
